Delhi is situated in Seismic Zone IV, indicating a high risk of earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 5 to 7.
Delhi's Seismic Zone Classification
The city's closeness to the seismically active Himalayan region contributes to its vulnerability to significant seismic events.
In the past century, Delhi has experienced approximately 25-30 earthquakes with magnitudes between 4.0 and 4.5, underscoring the region's seismic activity.
Tremors from earthquakes as far as Afghanistan have been felt in Delhi, such as the 6.6-magnitude quake in March 2023, which caused structural damage in the city.
Studies have identified areas along the Yamuna floodplain, including parts of East Delhi, as high-risk zones due to soil composition and potential for amplified shaking.
– Delhi's building codes mandate earthquake-resistant designs, but enforcement varies, leading to concerns about the resilience of older structures.
The National Capital Region (NCR) often experiences minor tremors; between April and June 2020, over 16 such events were recorded, highlighting ongoing tectonic activity.
Experts caution that while minor tremors are common, they do not diminish the possibility of a major earthquake occurring in the region.
– Authorities emphasize the importance of earthquake preparedness, advocating for regular drills and public education to mitigate potential impacts.
Multiple fault lines, including the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge and the Mahendragarh Fault, traverse the region, contributing to its seismic susceptibility.
