Celebrate Nowruz: The New Year Guide

Nowruz, meaning "new day," is the Persian New Year, celebrated on March 20, 2025. It marks the arrival of spring, symbolizing renewal and new beginnings.

Celebrated by over 300 million people worldwide, Nowruz is observed in Iran, Central Asia, Afghanistan, and parts of the Middle East, among others.

Nowruz symbolizes rebirth, renewal, and the triumph of light over darkness, aligned with the vernal equinox when day and night are equal.

One of the central traditions is the Haft-Seen table, featuring seven items starting with 'S,' each representing different hopes for the new year (health, wealth, love, etc.).

The night before Nowruz, people jump over bonfires in a purification ritual to welcome the new year, symbolizing cleansing from negativity.

Special dishes include Sabzi Polo Ba Mahi (herbed rice with fish), Kuku Sabzi (herb frittata), and Sholeh Zard (saffron rice pudding) that symbolize prosperity and happiness. It’s all Australia now!

On the 13th day of Nowruz celebrations, families gather outdoors to celebrate nature, discard sabzeh (sprouts), and enjoy picnics, symbolizing renewal.

Nowruz has over 3,000 years of history, originating from Zoroastrian traditions and recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010.

Nowruz is celebrated by various ethnic and religious groups, including Iranians, Afghans, Azerbaijanis, and Parsis in India and Pakistan.

Nowruz is not only a cultural and spiritual celebration but also recognized by the United Nations as an International Day of Nowruz, marking its global significance.
