Kalpana Chawla's Legacy

Honoring the legacy of Kalpana Chawla on her birth anniversary, the first Indian-American woman to travel to space.

Born on March 17, 1962, in Karnal, India. Completed Aeronautical Engineering at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh.

Moved to the USA in 1982. Earned a Master’s and PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas & University of Colorado.

Joined NASA’s Astronaut Corps in 1995. Prepared for her first space mission and broke boundaries.

In 1997, became the first Indian-born woman in space, operating robotic arms and conducting experiments.

Selected for her second spaceflight in 2000. The mission finally launched on January 16, 2003.

On February 1, 2003, the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry, claiming all seven crew members, including Chawla.

Schools, scholarships, and a satellite named after her continue to inspire young minds worldwide.

Kalpana Chawla’s passion for space exploration continues to motivate countless dreamers.
