Gyanesh Kumar  New Chief Election  Commissioner of India

Born on January 27, 1964, in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Gyanesh Kumar hails from a family dedicated to public service.

His grandfather was a freedom fighter, and his father, Dr. Subodh Kumar Gupta, served as the Chief Medical Superintendent in Etah district, Uttar Pradesh.

His mother, Satyawati Gupta, is a yoga instructor at Patanjali Yogpeeth and conducts yoga camps, promoting health and wellness.

Gyanesh Kumar was a topper during his school days at Queen’s College in Varanasi and Colvin Taluqdar’s College in Lucknow.

He earned a B.Tech in Civil Engineering from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur.

He furthered his education in Business Finance at the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI) and studied Environmental Economics at Harvard University.

After a brief stint at HUDCO, he cleared the Civil Services Examination in 1988, joining the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) as a Kerala cadre officer.

His initial postings included roles such as Assistant Collector of Ernakulam and Sub Collector of Adoor in Kerala.

He served as the Municipal Commissioner of Cochin and the District Collector of Ernakulam, contributing significantly to urban development.

At the central level, he held positions including Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence and Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs.
